What singularizes pearl from other gemstones is that it is organic matter acquired from a living creature – oysters and mollusks. Its chemical structure incorporates of calcium carbonate in minute crystalline form, which has been amassed in concentric layers. Pearl may occur in many shapes and each of its shape is unique as it is a naturally organic gem. Similar to diamonds which are different from each other, every pearl has a slight difference in its shape. Its shape is due to the position of nucleus and the nucleus itself within the mollusk. Round pearls are the most desired and cherished since they are rare and ‘natural’. When one thinks of a pearl, it is a round pearl that comes to mind. As a companion to the naturally occurring pearls, there are also cultured pearls which are farmed from oysters and freshwater mussels. The expense of the pearl depends on many factors such as the type of pearl, its luster, shape, color, nacre and size. Its luster shows its quality; a superior quality pearl is so bright and shiny that one can see their reflection upon it. One more factor is the nacre that gives a pearl its color and shine of its luster. The most expensive pearl is the one with thicker nacre.
