Yellow Sapphire , classified as a semi-precious stone, is member of the Corundum family like Ruby. It has a beautiful hue of yellow which comes from the little traces of iron present in its chemical structure. Transparent sapphires that have the flatter colour of sunset and sparkly surface are the most admired ones. Sapphires often have several visual interior inclusions. But the distinguishing trait of high quality yellow sapphire is that it doesn’t have any visible inclusions. Yellow sapphire was first found in the gem-rich island of Sri Lanka. The mines of Serendip in Sri Lanka are the primary source of yellow sapphire. Heavy rain in the fields washed out the stones and brought out the sapphire by chance. This event is termed as ‘Serendipity’. Madagascar, Tanzania, India and Australia also have some yellow sapphire mines. Tomahawk Tiger, weighing nearly 2020 carats is the largest yellow sapphire mined till date.
The Sinhalese and Sanskrit name for yellow sapphire is ‘padparadscha’. In ancient times it was also referred to as ‘hyacinth’.
